UK: Primark Christmas sales up 26%
By just-style.com | 17 January 2008
Sales at Primark were up 26% over Christmas period, the chain's owner owner Associated British Foods (ABF) said today (17 January), reflecting an increase in retail selling space and strong like-for-like sales growth in the UK.
The company, which is also looking to make inroads in Spain with its discount fast fashion business model, said that Christmas trading at Primark was ahead of expectations.
ABF now operates 173 Primark stores with 5m square feet of selling space. Since the end of last year it has opened new stores in Jerez and Madrid, taking its number of shops in Spain to four, with a further four stores planned to open in the country during April.
ABF added in an interim statement that its group revenue, for the 16 weeks to 5 January, was 13% ahead of the same period last year, driven by strong growth from each of its Primark, Agriculture, Grocery and Ingredients units.
