PERU: US brands tell government to repeal worker law

By | 6 March 2013

Leading apparel brands from the US are urging the Peruvian government to repeal legislation which allows suppliers to use short-term contracts to employ their workers.

The companies, The Life is Good Company, New Balance, Nike, PVH Corp and VF Corporation, have written to President Ollanta Humala Tasso to express their concern that the law will encourage violations of labour rights.

The law, Decree 22342, governs “non-traditional exports”, but a proposal to repeal its labour provisions is currently making its way through the committee stage before being put to the country’s Congress.

The repeal is strong opposed by textile and apparel manufacturers.

Jyrki Raina, general secretary of the Industriall Global Union, said: “We very much welcome this letter, which sends a clear message that in today’s global garment industry decent work is an element of competitiveness alongside quality, price and delivery on time.

“Peru produces quality cotton and fibres and has succeeded in positioning itself as a provider for major brands.

“However, the ‘made in Peru’ label is being tainted by the abuse that comes with the use of short-term employment contracts.”
