The following is a general roundup of apparel and shoe chains' January 2008 sales results. The list will be updated as new results become available.

US general retailer Wal-Mart Stores reported that same-store sales during January increased approximately 2%, but fell below expectations. Sales at Wal-Mart's operations in the UK, Canada, Brazil and China were strong during the January period, the company said.

Teen retailer Aéropostale said its January sales decreased 13.8% to $78.0m, from $90.4m for the five-week period last year. Same-store sales for the month were up 4.7%, compared to the corresponding period last year.

Gap Inc reported net sales of $932m for the four-week January period, compared to $1.19bn in the same month last year. But the company's same-store sales for January dropped by 2%, compared with flat comparable store sales for January 2007.

Fashion chain Abercrombie & Fitch posted net sales of $219.7m for the four-week period, down from last year's $252.3m. January same-store sales were flat for the month, compared to the four-week period ended 3 February, the company added.
 
Women's wear retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corporation posted a 14.7% drop in its sales for January, to $127.9m from $149.9m for the same period last year. Same-store sales for the four-week period were flat compared to the four-week period last year, as expected.
 
Children's merchandiser The Children's Place Retail Stores reported sales of $121.7m for the four-week period of January versus sales of $127.4m for the prior year. Same-store sales for the month increased 6% versus the corresponding four-week period last year.

Young women's retailer The Wet Seal said net sales for January were $36.8m, compared to $43.9m the year before. Same-store sales declined 5.7% for the month, compared to January 2007, within the range of earlier guidance.
 
Total January sales at Stage Stores fell to $82.1m from $99.5m during the same month last year. Same-store sales for the month increased 1.0%, the company added.

Maternity wear retailer Mothers Work said net sales for January dropped 5.2% to $38.7m from $40.8m. Same-store sales decreased 2.1%, based on 1,405 locations, versus a same-store sales decrease of 6.0% based on 1,464 locations in January 2007.

Macy's reported total sales of $1.275bn for the month, versus $1.782bn in the comparable period last year. The department store chain's same-store sales were down 7.1%.

Mall-based youth apparel retailer Hot Topic announced that January net sales fell 23.7% to $41.2m. Same-store sales were down 3.6%.

Casual fashion chain American Eagle Outfitters said its sales for the four weeks to 2 February were $163.9m, compared with $207.1m for the five weeks to 3 February last year. Its January same-store sales were down 7%, compared to a 12% increase for the same period last year. AE said that store traffic continued to decline against last year.

Active apparel chain Zumiez posted a 1.7% rise in same-store sales, versus an increase of 12.4% the year before. Total net sales for the four-week period increased 16.3% to $20.7m, compared to $17.8m in the prior year's January.

Men's formalwear operator JoS A Bank Clothiers said that comparing the four weeks of fiscal January 2007 with the five weeks of fiscal January 2006, total net sales decreased 17.1% to $34.3m. However, comparing the four weeks of fiscal January 2007 with the first four weeks of fiscal January 2006, same-store sales decreased 1.2%.

Off-price retailer Ross Stores reported January sales of $350m, a 9% increase over the $322m in sales during last year's period. Same-store sales for the four weeks increased 1% over the four weeks.

Branded clothing chain Chico's FAS said sales results for the four-week period ended 2 February 2008 decreased 25.0% to $94.1m from $125.4m last year. Same-store sales dropped 22.1% for the month, versus the same four-week period last year.

Fashion retailer Nordstrom posted preliminary sales of $486.3m for the four-week period, against sales of $610.1m in last year's period. Same-store sales fell 6.6%.

Value-priced women's wear chain The Cato Corporation reported sales of $56.4m for the four weeks ended 2 February, from $69.3m during the previous January - a decrease of 19%. On a same-store basis, sales fell 2%.

Victoria's Secret and La Senza operator Limited Brands reported same-store sales down 8% for the month. The company said net sales slumped 40.9% to $625.8m from $1.06bn.
