US: Retailers’ May 2006 sales roundup

The following is a general roundup of apparel and shoe chains' May 2006 sales results. The list will be updated as new results become available.

Ladies' wear retailer Cato said net sales increased 2% to $73.8m compared to $72.3m last year. Same-store sales decreased 2%.

Youth clothing retailer Buckle said total sales increased 0.9% to $31.1m from $30.8m a year ago, as same-store sales decreased 3.8%.

Discount retailer Ross Stores said total sales increased 13% to $417m compared to $370m a year ago. Same-stores increased 5%.

Trendy apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch said total sales increased 17% to $185.7m from $159m last year. Same-store sales increased 3%.

Women's clothing retailer AnnTaylor Stores said total sales increased 23% to $217.6m from $177.1m in 2005. Same-store sales increased 12%.

Ladies' wear chain Christopher & Banks said total sales increased 19% to $46.6m compared to $39.3m in the year-ago period. Same-store sales increased 8%.

Plus-size retailer United Retail Group said total sales increased 7.5% to $42.1m from $39.1m in 2005. Same-store sales increased 5%.

Women's wear chain bebe stores said retail sales increased 9.4% to $49.1m compared to $44.9m this time last year. Same-store sales increased 1.6%

Lifestyle retailer Guess? said total retail sales increased 26.8% to $50.3m from $39.7m a year ago with same-store sales increasing 20%.

Children's wear chain Gymboree said net retail sales increased 29% to $47.3m from $36.7m a year ago, while same-stores increased 24%.

Specialty apparel retailer Dress Barn said total sales increased 13% to $118.4m from $104.7m. Same-store sales increased 9%.

Leather wear retailer Wilsons The Leather Experts said sales were $15.6m compared to $17.2m with a 9.1% same-store sales decrease.

Trendy apparel retailer American Eagle Outfitters said total sales increased 19%  to $168.8m from $141.6m a year ago, with same-store sales increasing 11%.

Action sports apparel retailer Zumiez said total net sales increased 39.5% to $15.0 million, compared to $10.7m, while same-store sales increased 18.2%.

Mall-based apparel retailer Aeropostale said total net sales increased 17.9% to $73.9 million compared to $62.6m, while same-store sales decreased 1.1%.

Maternity wear retailer Mothers Work said preliminary net sales increased about 8.7% to $56.4m from $51.9m in 2005. Same-store sales increased 5.5%.

Specialty retailer Wet Seal's net sales decreased 6.7% to $37.3m from $40m last year as same-store sales decreased 8.3%.

Upscale apparel and shoe chain Nordstrom said total sales increased 10.1% to $600.8m from $545.6m a year ago. Same-store sales increased 7.8%.

Women's wear retailer AnnTaylor Stores said total net sales increased 22.8% to $217.6m over total net sales of $177.1m last year. Same-store sales increased 12%.

Discount retailer Stein Mart said net sales increased 1.5% to $119.6m from $117.9m in 2005. Same-store sales increased 1%.

Women's wear chain Cache said net sales increased 6% to $22.7m while same-store sales increased 6%.

Ladies' apparel retailer Chico's net sales increased 20.4% t0 $141.1m from $117.1m in 2005. Same-store sales increased 7.2%.

Men's wear chain Jos A Bank Clothiers said net sales increased 17% to $36.7m from $31.5m. Same-store sales increased 7.1%.

Ladies' clothing chain New York & Co said net sales increased 3% to $99.7m from $96.8. Same-store sales decreased 5.2%.

Clothing retailer Children's Place Retail Stores said net sales increased 25% to $112.7m from $90.4m last year. Same-store sales increased 18%.

Diversified retailer Limited Brands said net sales increased 7% to $719.4m from $672.9m in 2005, while same-store sales increased 7%.

Retail group Saks said total company sales decreased 44.9% to $231.2m from $419.6m last year while same-store sales increased 1.15.

Department store chain Kohl's said sales increased 11.5% to $1bn from $899.1m last year.  

Value chain Target's net retail sales increased 12.3% to $3.93bn from $3.5bn a year ago. Same-store sales increased 5.7%.

Upmarket retailer Neiman Marcus said total revenues increased 7.9% to $291m from $269m in 2005, with a 5.4% increased in same-store sales.

Department store retailer Federated said total sales increased 70.2% to $2.03bn from $1.19bn a year ago. Same-store sales increased 9.2%.                            

Fashion apparel chain Dillard's said net sales increased 3% on a total and same-store basis. Net sales were $534.30m compared to $518.97m in 2005.

Department store company Bon-Ton said total sales increased 161% to $232.3m from $89m a year ago, while same-store sales decreased 4.1%.

Retailer Deb Shops Inc reported that comparable store sales increased 1.4% for the month ended 31 May 2006. Total sales increased 4.8% to $27.4m from $26.2m for the same month last year.

Tandy Leather Factory Inc said sales for the month of May were $4.5m, an increase of 17% from $3.9m last year. Year-to-date sales are up 13% to $23.3m in the current year from $20.7m last year. Retail Leathercraft posted a 37% sales increase for May to $1.7m, while Wholesale Leathercraft posted sales of $2.6m for May.
