USA: Round-Up Of Apparel Retailers' July Sales Results
Large-size women's fashion apparel and footwear company United Retail Group Inc posted a four per cent rise in July same-store sales and added total sales at its 554 stores rose to $27.3m from $26.1m last year. It added second quarter same-store sales fell seven per cent with total sales falling to $104.8m from $113.7m.
Men's apparel chain Men's Wearhouse posted a 9.6 per cent jump in same-store sales for the four weeks to August 2 and added total sales at its 681 stores rose eight per cent year-on-year to $84.2m.
Casual clothing chain American Eagle Outfitters Inc said same-store sales at its namesake shops fell 10.5 per cent last month with consolidated same-store sales, which includes its Bluenotes chain in Canada, fell 10.1 per cent. It added total sales for the four weeks to August 2 edged up 0.7 per cent to $111.2m.
Off-price apparel retailer Factory-2-U Stores Inc reported a five per cent fall in same-store sales for last month as total sales at its 242 stores falling 7.8 per cent to $38.3m from $41.6m in the year-ago period.
Specialty retailer of music-licensed and music-influenced apparel Hot Topic Inc enjoyed an 8.7 per cent climb in same-store sales for the four weeks to August 2 with total sales at its 497 stores up 28 per cent to $42.1m from $32.8m last year. It added second quarter same-store sales rose 5.2 per cent and net sales 25 per cent to $115.7m from $92.5m.
New York-based retailer of casual and active apparel for young people Aeropostale Inc posted a 19.3 per cent surge in July same-store sales and added total sales at its 427 stores rose 59.2 per cent to $49.5m from $31.1m in 2002.
Maternity apparel chain Mothers Work Inc posted a 2.9 per cent rise in same-store sales for last month with total sales at its 986 stores up 12.9 per cent to $39.4m from $34.9m in 2002 on a bigger store base.
Department store chain Gottschalks Inc posted a 0.1 per cent rise in same-store sales for July and added total sales for the month fell 2.8 per cent to $42m from $43.2m in the year-ago period.
The Ohio-based firm behind lingerie chain Victoria's Secret, Limited Brands, said its same-store sales climbed two per cent last month with net sales reaching $563.2m from $529.4m in the year prior.
Women's fashion chain Bebe Stores Inc reported a 5.2 per cent rise in July same-store sales as net sales at its 181 stores in the US and Canada rose 11.6 per cent to $26m from $23.3m in the year-ago period.
Texas-based clothing retailer Stage Stores Inc posted a one per cent slip in same-store sales for the four weeks ended August 2 and added total sales edged up 2.2 per cent to $70.5m from $69m last year.
Goody's Family Clothing Inc announced a 0.9 per cent rise in July same-store sales as total sales at its 332 stores rose 2.4 per cent to $92.3m from $90.1m in the same month of last year.
Upscale department store chain Nordstrom Inc said July sales at stores open at least a year rose 6.1 per cent with total sales at its 143 stores up nine per cent year-on-year to $690.2m and quarterly sales up 7.9 per cent to $1.8 billion.
Department-store chain Sears Roebuck & Co posted a 0.8 per cent fall in July same-store sales with total sales for the period down slightly to $1.91bn from $1.92bn in 2002.
Trendy apparel chain Pacific Sunwear of California Inc reported a 15.1 per cent jump in same-store sales for the four weeks to August 2 and added total sales at its stores rose 24 per cent to $83.7m from $67.5m last year.
Off-price fashion group The TJX Companies Inc posted a three per cent hike in July same-store sales and revealed total sales climbed 11 per cent to $899m from $810m in the same period of the year prior.
The Spiegel Group said monthly same-store sales at its Eddie Bauer division rose five per cent on strong sales of women’s apparel which offset weak demand for its men’s fashions.
Wisconsin-based clothing retailer Kohl's Corp reported a 6.7 per cent climb in July same-store sales with total sales at its 492 outlets for the four weeks to August 3 up 21.4 per cent year-on-year.
Brown Shoe Company Inc said same-store sales at its Famous Footwear chain fell 3.2 per cent with total sales falling to $85.1m from $86.3m last year and second quarter sales flat at $269m. It added same-store sales at its Naturalizer division fell 6.9 per cent with total sales down at $8.1m and quartely sales down 10 per cent to $30.2m.
Specialty retailer The Wet Seal Inc announced a 12.3 per cent plunge in July same-store sales as total sales fell to $41.1m from $43.8m last year. Second quarter sales at the operator of 622 stores fell to $126m from $146.2m last year.
Women's fashion group AnnTaylor Stores Corp said July same-store sales 7.6 per cent with net sales for the month up 15.7 per cent year-on-year to $116.5m and quarterly sales up 13.7 per cent to $390.2m.
Retail giant Federated Department Stores Inc announced a 0.5 per cent slip in total sales for July to $963m from $969m last year as same-store sales slipped 0.4 per cent. Second quarter same-store sales fell 1.2 per cent with total sales down 1.5 per cent year-on-year to $3.43bn.
Youth-oriented apparel chain Abercrombie & Fitch Co said it same-store sales fell 11 per cent last month with net sales up six per cent from 2002 to $133.2m.
Major retailer JC Penney Co Inc announced a 3.7 per cent hike in same-store sales at its department store division on the back of strong demand for men's fashions.
Women's fashion chain The Talbots Inc posted a 0.7 per cent hike in same-store sales for last month with total sales at its 924 stores up six per cent year-on-year to $100.5m.
Florida-based specialty retailer of women's apparel, Chico's FAS Inc, posted a 15.7 per cent surge in July same-store sales with total sales for the four weeks to August 2 up 38 per cent to $47.7m from $34.6m last year. Total second quarter sales jumped 39% to $173.4m from $125.1m.
Specialty chain of women's apparel, Cache Inc, posted a nine per cent jump in same-store sales and added total sales at its 240 stores rose 13 per cent to $12.8m from $11.3m in the year-ago period.
Plus-size women's clothing chain Charming Shoppes Inc posted a four per cent rise in July same-store sales with total sales at its 2,240 stores up one per cent to $170.5m from $168.3m last year. Second quarter same-store sales fell one per cent with total sales down five per cent to $599.7m.
Texas-based operator of 427 stores Gadzooks Inc posted a 34.3 per cent plunge in July same-store sales as it switched to a women's fashion retailer and ditched its men's business. It added total sales fell 34.9 per cent to $15.7m from $24.1m with second quarter sales down 10.7 per cent to $68.5m from $76.7m.
