The following is a round up of apparel and footwear companies sales results for May which have just been released:

May Department Stores Co, operator of 436 stores under banners such as Lord & Taylor, Filene's and Hecht's, posted a 7.6 per cent fall in same-store sales and said total sales fell four per cent to $1.05 billon from $1.1bn in 2001.

Controversial youth-oriented clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co said sales at stores open at least a year slid nine per cent as cooler weather hit sales of summer clothing. The Ohio-based company added net sales in the four weeks to June 1 climbed to $85.2 million from $73.8m in 2001.

Federated Department Stores Inc reported a 3.4 per cent slip in same-store sales and said total sales for the month fell 0.8 per cent to $1.1 billion from the year-ago period as cooler weather impacted on warm weather merchandise.

Internet retailer of designer fashions at outlet store prices Bluefly Inc said its net sales for May surged more than 19 per cent to around $2.5 million from the $2.1m it registered in the same month last year.

Specialty retailer of casual apparel and footwear, Pacific Sunwear of California Inc, said total sales in May leapt 18.8 per cent to $50 million from $42.1m in the year prior, with same-store sales up 3.1 per cent.

Leading plus-size and children's apparel retailer Talbots Inc said its same-store sales fell a better-than-expected three per cent and revealed that total sales for the month were up one per cent to $114.1 million.

Kohl's enjoyed strong sales in May with same-store sales up 8.7 per cent and total sales up 24.8 per cent, while Target Corp posted a 2.6 per cent rise in same-store sales and added that total monthly sales were up 11.3 per cent.

Retail giant JC Penney Co Inc said it had a poor May with same-store sales down 5.1 per cent and total sales down one per cent. Rival Sears, Roebuck and Co registered a 4.4 per cent slide in domestic same-store sales but said total sales were up 1.5 per cent.

Kids fashion chain Children's Place Retail Stores Inc said same-store sales fell nine per cent but that total sales for the month rose by the same amount to $39.7 million from $36.3m in the year-ago period., worse than the 6.5% decline analysts expected.

Womenswear chain bebe stores inc said same-store sales fell 7.3 per cent but total sales climbed 6.7 per cent to $25.4 million from sales of $23.8m in 2001. For the 11 months to May 31, total sales were up 8.9 per cent to $290m.

Fashion retailer Wet Seal Inc said same-store sales rose 7.3 per cent last month with total sales up 13.5 per cent to $47.1 million from $41.5m in 2001. It added same-store sales for the 17 weeks to June 1 climbed eight per cent and total sales rose 13.6 per cent to $203.7m.
