USA: Round-Up Of Retailers' February Sales Results
The following is a general round-up of apparel and footwear firms' latest same-store and total sales results - many cited snow blizzards as a reason for their poor performances - released over the past couple of days:
Men's clothing chain Men's Wearhous Inc posted a 0.5 per cent increase in US same-store sales and a 7.7 per cent slip in Canadian same-store sales. It added total sales for the month grew 3.7 per cent to $87m from $84m in 2002.
Specialty retailer of large-size women's fashion apparel and footwear, United Retail Group Inc, posted a 13 per cent slide in February same-store sales and said total sales fell to $27m from $31.1m in the year-ago period.
Casual and active apparel retailer Aeropostale Inc reported a 3.1 per cent slip in same-store sales for last month and said total sales jumped 25.6 per cent to $27.2m from $21.6m in the year prior.
Lifestyle apparel chain Guess Inc announced a 1.4 per cent rise in same-store sales for the four weeks to March 1 and said total sales for the month climbed 8.9 per cent year-on-year to $28.5m from $26.2m.
Youth-oriented apparel chain American Eagle Outfitters Inc registered a seven per cent slide in February same-store sales but said total sales for the month edged up 4.5 per cent year-on-year to $74.3m.
Off-price fashion chain Factory 2-U Stores Inc announced a 7.7 per cent fall in same-store sales for the four weeks to March 1 and said total sales for the period fell 15.2 per cent to $28.8m from $34m last year.
Upscale Seattle-based retailer Nordstrom Inc reported a 2.3 per cent slip in February same-store sales and added total sales rose 2.4 per cent to $367.6m from $359.1m.
Women's clothing chain Talbots Inc posted an 11.7 per cent slide in same-store sales for the four weeks to March 1 and said total sales fell nine per cent year-on-year to $76.4m
Specialty chain of women's apparel Cache Inc reported a three per cent slip in same-store sales for the four weeks to February 22 and said total sales for the period decreased one per cent to $14.1m from $14.2m in 2002.
Leading footwear retailer Brown Shoe Co said same-store sales at its Famous Footwear chain fell 8.5 per cent and total sales 7.4 per cent to $67.2m. It added same-store sales at its Naturalizer chain dropped 7.6 per cent and total sales almost 26 per cent to $6m on a base of 75 fewer stores from 2002.
Kohl's Corp reported a 10.2 per cent year-on-year climb in total sales for last month, without giving any figures, but said same-store sales slipped 4.6 per cent.
The Spiegel Group announced a 23 per cent slide in total sales to $120.1m from $156.6m and said same-store sales at its Eddie Bauer division climbed eight per cent.
Leading off-price clothing retailer and operator of around 1,500 stores, the TJX Companies Inc, reported a three per cent in total sales to $776m from $752m and added consolidated same-store sales fell five per cent.
Casual apparel chain Abercrombie & Fitch Co reported a four per cent slip in February same-store sales but said total sales jumped 12 per cent year-on-year to $100m.
Women's apparel retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corp revealed an 8.6 per cent fall in same-store sales for last month and said total sales in the four weeks ended March 2 fell 0.9 per cent to $81.3m from 2002.
California-based fashion chain reported a 31.5 per cent slump in February same-store sales and said total sales plunged to $34.4m from $47.3m for the comparable four-week period in the year prior.
Leading maternitywear retailer Mothers Work Inc announced a one per cent climb in total sales for last month to $33.6m from $33.2m but said same-store sales fell five per cent.
The owner of top lingerie chain Victoria's Secret, Ohio-based Limited Brands Inc, registered a one per cent slip in February same-store sales and said net sales rose three per cent to $571.6m from $555.4m last year.
Value-priced footwear chain Shoe Carnival Inc said it enjoyed a 1.6 per cent rise in monthly sales to $35.3m from $34.8m but added same-store sales fell 8.5 per cent during the month.
Fast-growing women's apparel chain Bebe Stores Inc reported a 15.2 per cent slide in February same-store sales sand said total sales fell $20.9m from $23m.
Men's classically-styled tailored and casual clothing, sportswear and footwear retailer, Jos A Bank Clothiers Inc, posted a seven per cent rise in total monthly sales to $15.4m from $14.4m and added same-store sales edged up three per cent.
Texas-based apparel and shoe retailer Stage Stores Inc suffered a 7.6 per cent slide in same-store sales for the four weeks to March 2 and said total sales decreased 4.8 per cent to $59.5m from $62.5m in 2002.
Kids' apparel chain The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc posted a 24 per cent plunge in same-store sales for February and said total sales fell eight per cent to $44.3m from $48.2m in the year-ago period.
Specialty retailer of women's clothing, Christopher & Banks Corp, reported a 10 per cent slide in same-store sales for last month but added total sales increased 11 per cent to $21.5m from $19.4m last year.
New York-based online fashion retailer Bluefly.com posted a 13 per cent jump in February sales to $2.7m from $2.4m in 2002.
Department store chain The Elder-Beerman Stores Corp said its same-store sales fell 14.5 per cent and added its total store sales fell by the same percentage figure to $35.9m from the year-ago period.
Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc said its same-store sales grew eight per cent last month while its total sales rose 8.7 per cent to $40.6m from $37.3m in the year prior.
Women's clothing chain Charming Shoppes Inc said its February same-store sales fell nine per cent and total sales plunged 14 per cent to $150.3m from $175m in 2002. It added Lane Bryant same-store sales dropped 15 per cent, Fashion Bug same-store sales five per cent and Catherines same-store sales five per cent.
Footwear retail giant Payless ShoeSource Inc reported a 0.6 per cent slip in February same-store sales and said total sales for the four weeks to March 1 rose 0.4 per cent to $175.3m from $174.6m a year earlier.
Youth-oriented fashion chain Gadzooks Inc posted a 11.9 per cent fall in same-store sales for last month and said total sales fell 9.7 per cent to $21.4m from $32.7m in 2002.
