USA: Round-Up Of Retailers' May Sales Results
Leading apparel retailer Gap Inc reported net sales of $1.2 billion, up seven per cent from $1.1bn in May last year, and a six per cent increase in comparable store sales.
Philadelphia-based maternity wear retailer Mothers Work Inc reported a 6.5 per cent increase in total sales to $50 million, up from $47m in May 2003, despite a three per cent drop in same-store sales.
Plus-size women's apparel retailer United Retail Group posted total sales of $36m for the month, down slightly from $36.9m in the same period a year ago, along with a one per cent dip in comparable store sales.
Tennessee-based apparel retailer Goody's Family Clothing Inc registered a 3.5 per cent increase in total sales to $99.4m, up from $96m in the year-ago period, while same-store sales inched up 1.3 per cent.
Youth-oriented casual apparel retailer Aeropostale Inc enjoyed a 56.8 per cent jump in total sales to $54.1m, up from $34.5m in the same month last year, and 27 per cent comparable store sales growth.
Houston-based men's apparel retailer Men's Wearhouse experienced a 10.5 per cent hike in net sales to $123.6m for the month, up from $111.9m in the comparable year-on-year period, along with a comparable store sales boost of 7.8 per cent.
Californian casual apparel retailer Hot Topic Inc saw total sales jump 21 per cent to $37.7m, up from $31.2m in the same period of 2003, while same-store sales dipped 0.5 per cent.
Youth-oriented apparel retailer American Eagle Outfitters Inc posted 20.1 per cent total sales growth to $117.3m for the month, compared with $97.6m in the same period last year, and an 11.4 per cent increase in comparable store sales.
Women's apparel retailer Cache Inc registered a 10 per cent year-on-year rise in total sales to $19.8m and a four per cent increase in comparable store sales.
Indiana-based footwear retailer reported total sales of $43.1m, an 8.8 per cent increase over the $39.6m posted in May last year, along with a 0.5 per cent incline in same-store sales.
Leather apparel retailer Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc suffered a fall in total sales to $16m for the month, down from $20.9m in the same period a year earlier, and a 6.4 per cent drop in comparable store sales.
Regional apparel retailer Stage Stores Inc witnessed a 39.4 per cent leap in total sales to $90.6m, up from $65m in the same period of 2002, along with a one per cent rise in same-store sales.
Maryland-based men's apparel retailer JoS A Bank Clothiers Inc announced total sales of $26.2m, up 22.4 per cent from $21.4m in May last year, and comparable store sales growth of 6.4 per cent.
California-based women's apparel retailer Bebe Stores Inc enjoyed a 15.4 per cent increase in retail sales to $32.9m, compared with $28.5m in the same period a year prior, and 10.4 per cent boost to same-store sales.
Retail group Limited Brands, which operates the Victoria's Secret lingerie chain, posted a same-store sales increase of three percent and a rise in net sales to $641.4m, up from $618.1m in the comparable year-ago period.
Casual apparel and footwear retailer The Buckle Inc experienced a 14.9 per cent rise in total sales to $27.3m, up from $23.8m in the same month a year ago, and an 8.3 per cent incline in comparable store sales.
New Jersey-based kids' wear retailer The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc registered improved sales of $57.2m, up 18 per cent from $48.4m in the same period a year prior, and a nine per cent rise in same-store sales.
Florida-based women's apparel retailer Chico's FAS Inc enjoyed a 50.7 per cent leap in total sales to $90.2m, up from $59.8m in May last year, along with a 17.9 per cent jump in comparable store sales.
Value-priced women's apparel retailer The Cato Corporation reported a 10 per cent rise in total sales to $69.5m for the month, up from $63.1m in May 2003, and a comparable store sales improvement of four per cent.
Minneapolis-based women's clothing retailer Christopher & Banks Corporation stated a nine per cent rise in total sales to $32.4m for the month, up from $29.8m in the same period last year, and a six per cent fall in same-store sales.
Florida-based fashion retailer Stein Mart Inc posted a 6.2 per cent rise in total sales to $114.8m for May, up from $108.2m in the same period a year ago, and an 11.1 per cent rise in comparable store sales.
Californian fashion retailer The Wet Seal Inc saw net sales fall to $33m, down from $37m in the same month last year, while same-store sales slid 7.8 per cent.
Massachusetts-based apparel and footwear retailer The Talbots Inc announced a 10 per cent increase in net sales to $127.6m, up from $115.9m in the same period of 2003, and an 8.1 per cent same-store sales rise.
Casual apparel retailer Pacific Sunwear of California Inc noted an 18.5 per cent jump in total sales to $72.4m, up from $61.1m in the comparable year-ago period, and a 7.8 per cent rise in comparable store sales.
Seattle-based fashion retailer Nordstrom Inc reported improved preliminary sales of $499m for the month, an 11.7 per cent year-on-year increase, as well as a same-store sales rise of 9.4 per cent.
Massachusetts-based apparel retailer Casual Male Retail Group Inc registered improved sales of $26.6m for the month, compared with $24.3m in the same period last year, and comparable store sales growth of 11.9 per cent.
Philadelphia-based juniors' apparel retailer Deb Shops Inc reported a 2.3 per cent rise in comparable store sales and a two per cent year-on-year fall in total sales to $25.6m.
Children's apparel retailer The Gymboree Corporation announced a seven per cent rise in total sales to $36.6m, up from $34.4m in the same month last year, as well as a one per cent slip in comparable store sales.
Youth-oriented casual apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch enjoyed a 20 per cent boost in total sales to $111.5m, up from $93.1m in May 2003, and a comparable store sales rise of one per cent.
Fashion retailer Guess? Inc registered total sales growth of 20 per cent to $35.8m, up from $29.9m in the same period a year ago, and a 14.6 per cent jump in same-store sales.
Women's apparel retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corporation stated 23.7 per cent total sales growth for the month, growing to $169.87m from $137.37m in the same period a year ago, and a 9.9 per cent improvement in same-store sales.
Online fashion retailer Bluefly Inc saw net sales grow almost 24 per cent to $3.1m, up from $2.5m in the same period a year earlier.
Apparel and home fashions retailer The TJX Companies Inc reported total sales of $1.1bn, a 13 per cent year-on-year increase, and a consolidated comparable store sales rise of five per cent.
Leading footwear retailer Payless ShoeSource Inc registered a 3.9 per cent increase in same-store sales and a 4.3 per cent rise in total sales to $246.7m, up from $236.5m in the comparable year-on-year period.
Value-priced menswear retailer S&K Famous Brands Inc experienced a minimal decrease in net sales to $13.8m, down from $13.9m in May last year, as well as a 3.7 per cent drop in comparable store sales.
California-based apparel retailer Ross Stores Inc noted an eight per cent year-on-year increase in total sales to $296m and a one per cent drop in same-store sales.
St Louis-based footwear group Brown Shoe Company Inc registered 0.2 per cent year-on-year growth in retail sales to $85.1m and a 2.2 per cent dip in same-store sales.
Dallas-based girls' apparel retailer Gadzooks Inc suffered a 19.5 per cent fall in comparable store sales.
