UK: Sainsbury's to move clothing depot to Bedford

By | 4 April 2012

Sainsbury's is set to move its boxed and hanging clothing depot from Coventry to Bedford as the retailer grows its apparel offer.

The proposed move would result in the phased closure of Sainsbury's Coventry depot, currently managed by DHL, and the possibility of redundancies, with the depot closing during the early part of 2013. The Bedford site is also managed by DHL.

According to local press reports, up to 700 jobs will be affected by the shift.

DHL said that affected staff have been advised of the situation and will shortly enter consultation with the company and elected representatives to discuss their options, which include transferring to other DHL operations in the area, re-deploying to the Bedford facility, or to other sites in Sainsbury's network.

"Both DHL and Sainsbury's thank the team at Coventry for its ongoing dedication during this difficult time and stress that Sainsbury's decision in no way reflects on the quality of work at the site," a DHL spokesperson said.
