UK: Skillset launches new fashion apprenticeships

By | 8 February 2011

Training provider Skillset has joined forces with UK fashion companies to provide a growing number of apprenticeships to young people wanting to enter the fashion and textile industries.

Highlighting the programme during National Apprenticeship Week, Skillset said the apprenticeships were currently available in apparel, textiles, footwear, leather goods and saddlery.

From April, additional apprenticeships will be available in laundry, dry cleaning, textile care services, tailoring and leather production.

More than 100 people are currently taking apprenticeships in fashion and textiles, with that number set to grow “significantly” in the next 12 months.

Companies including Mulberry and ASOS.com have joined the scheme, taking on apprentices in a number of different business areas.

“Our hope is that this apprenticeship will make our industries more accessible to young people from a diverse range of backgrounds,” said Skillset chief executive Dinah Craine.

“Not only will these apprentices be learning the most relevant and up-to-date skills in their chosen roles, they will also be forging valuable networks within their industries, and earning a wage while they do it.”
