Branded apparel retailer Stage Stores Inc has enjoyed a 41 per cent boost in first quarter net income to $18.9m, up from $13.4m in the same period a year earlier.

The Texas-based company, which also operates under the Bealls, Pebbles and Palais Royal trading names, had a similar increase in sales for the quarter, posting 46.3 per cent year-on-year rise to $289.7m.

Comparable store sales, meanwhile, crept up 4.5 per cent.

CEO Jim Scarborough described the first quarter results as "very solid".

"Most of our key merchandise categories achieved comparable store sales increases during the quarter, and our small, mid-size and large market store groups each had positive comparable store sales results," he said.

Stage operates 516 stores across 27 states.
