Children's footwear producer Stride Rite Corp has posted a loss of $1 million for the fourth quarter, up from a loss of $2m in the same period a year prior.

The Massachusetts-based company, which manufacturers footwear under license to Tommy Hilfiger and Keds, also saw sales rise six per cent year-on-year for the quarter to $103.8m.

Sales at company-owned stores, meanwhile, rose eight per cent.

Despite the loss, Stride Rite CEO David Chamberlain was optimistic about continued sales gains by the company.

"I was particularly pleased with the sales gains we achieved in our Stride Rite Children's Group, Tommy Hilfiger Footwear and Sperry Top-Sider brands," he said.

"We believe this momentum should carry into the new fiscal year."
