Leeds University, School of Textile Industries, is leading a determined push by the world of academic research to attract more external funding by extending the scope of its annual Survival Conference to buyers and merchandise directors in major high street stores.

Established for 20 years 'Survival' has an enviable record in bringing leading-edge research in a huge variety of textile developments to the notice of the sports enthusiast and technical staff in the outdoor garment industry.

The market has visibly and dramatically shifted however, and fashion has taken over a large proportion of the market in high performance clothing and footwear.

Papers on smart textiles, personal protective clothing (PPE), water repellency and waxing in outerwear, as well as on 'the wicking mechanism' in yarns and its relationship to fabric performance, will be presented at Survival 2001 - taking place at Weetwood Hall Hotel, Leeds, on April 10 2001.
