Off-price apparel retailer Syms Corp has reported a second quarter net loss of $1.4 million ($0.10 per share), flat with the same period last year, on lower sales.

For the three months to 1 September, total sales were down to $61.4m from $62.7m, while same store sales rose by a marginal 0.9%. 

For the six month period, net loss was $0.7m ($0.05 per share) compared with a profit of $4.4m ($0.30 per share) in the prior year period when the company benefited from a $10.4m real estate sale.

First half net sales decreased 0.3% to $128.5m, and same store sales rose by 3.1%.

Syms Corp operates a chain of 33 stores selling designer and brand-name labels.
