Greece's textile and garment sector suffered more than 45,000 job losses between 2001 and 2004, according to data revealed at a meeting of the Hellenic Fashion Industry Association.

The job losses were attributed to both a growth cheap imports from countries such as China and the movement of production to neighbouring Balkan countries

Employment in the sector fell 8.0 per cent in 2004, as exports dropped 8.7 per cent.

Imports during the year grew 13.4 per cent, while total production in the year fell 5.5 per cent.
