CHINA: UPM Raflatac opens new label unit in Guangdong
By just-style.com | 27 November 2008
Label specialist UPM Raflatac has opened a new RFID manufacturing site in Guangzhou, southern China.
The addition of the new facility means that UPM now manufactures RFID tags and inlays in three continents: Asia, North America and Europe.
The factory has an initial production capacity of 100m pieces, including high-frequency and ultra-high frequency passive RFID tags and inlays.
UPM said the factory capacity was scalable to hundreds of millions of pieces annually, depending on demand.
Manufacturing in Guangdong province had advantages, the company added, including proximity to existing and potential customers, and direct access to the Chinese market.
It also eliminates the need to import products from other factories.
"The opportunity to operate locally gives us a solid base for growth in the Asian market and at the same time validates our position as the globally leading manufacturer of RFID tags and inlays," said Christer Härkönen, senior vice president of UPM Raflatac's RFID business.
