USA: USDA Predicts Record Cotton Production

By | 15 September 2004

The US Department of Agriculture has predicted record cotton production in 2004, despite many parts of the country being ravaged by hurricane Ivan.

The USDA forecasts that production will increase 14 per cent from 18.3 million bales last year to 20.9 million bales.

Yield is expected to average 758 pounds per acre - an increase of 28 pounds from 2003.

The government has confirmed that both of these would be US records.

Cotton production has increased in Arizona, Arkansas, New Mexico, North Carolina and Texas, counterbalancing decreases in production in Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia.
