With exhibitors planning to offer the latest in software, machinery, fabrics and more, Bobbin World kicks off next week with something for the entire sewn products industry - as this preview shows.

Bobbin World, the triennial exposition and conference for the sewn products industry, promises to offer a revolutionary trade show experience - with its unique "Windows To Your World" theme and an extensive range of new products in its exhibits.

Being held August 15-17 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL, Bobbin World 2001 will feature the "Windows To Your World" streetscape - including physical displays and electronic directories designed to guide attendees to specific types of technology, products and services. A "Windows To Your World" online directory of show offerings will be available at www.BobbinWorld.com.

With attendance expected to exceed 14,000, Bobbin World 2001 will have more than 330,000 square feet of exhibits, including more than 14,000 square feet of production sourcing pavilions with representation from Haiti, Guatemala, Taiwan, the Andean countries, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and other countries and regions. The show is sponsored by the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), the Sewn Products Equipment Suppliers Association (SPESA) and Bobbin and La Bobina magazines.

Bobbin World 2001 also will offer 47 seminar sessions covering a wide variety of industry segments. Nine workshops, including an off-site walking tour of Walt Disney World's Creative Costuming and Textile Department, also will be offered.

AC/Automated Components
will exhibit a variety of stackers, including robotic, take-away, flip, rock-away and shunt type for the automatic handling of products or parts from completed operations. All stackers are manufactured in the United States and are economically priced to allow for easy payback and elimination of costly labor.

ACW - American Cord and Webbing Co Inc will introduce a new hook and loop programme. "We are already fabricating dots and assemblies for our customers as well as shipping roll goods from stock," says Dennis Smith, national sales manager.

Robotic Stacker

AMF Reece will introduce the Lockwelt 3000, a variable length pocket welt machine that can be used for making all types of welted pockets at a rate of 2,000-2,200 pockets per eight-hour period. The control panel displays the pocket type, welt length, corner knife positions, sewing functions and parameters, and optional accessories selected for use with the chosen programme.

American Dryer Corp (ADC) will exhibit its new ADG-670 industrial laundry dryer for denim processing. The ADG-670 comes standard with ADC's fifth generation computer system that has multilingual readout capabilities, heavy gauge stainless steel drum and a unique gas burner system for high efficiency operation.

American Niagara will introduce two tabletop cleaning stations, the No 80 Workhorse and the Lil Sucker. Both are designed to offer sewing factories affordable cleaning stations, which can be placed anywhere.

Apparel Machinery and Supply Co will show a new reel-to-reel attachment for the Reliant Nova 45 continuous small conveyor fusing press. This reel-to-reel attachment is designed for the continuous fusing of waistbands. It includes an unwind reel for the fusible, as well as adjustable guides for meeting the width requirements of the fusible and waistband. Finished fused waistbands can be re-wound onto a reel at the exit end of the attachment.

Asheboro Elastics will be showcasing its newly improved EZ cord elastics, as well as Double Plush knitted elastic, Rol Control for men's suiting, men's underwear elastic and home furnishing elastic.

Astechnologies Inc will be introducing its new Astex Model 5263 high-quality, wide-width fusing machine for cut parts, block and roll-to-roll fabric fusing in the apparel industry. The Astex Model 5263 offers a 63-inch fusing belt width, 62-inch long heat chamber, dual pressure roller system and multi-zone heat control. It is designed as a low-cost alternative for such applications as tailored clothing and women's outerwear products.

Avery Dennison VIP Converted Products will demonstrate InfoChain Express, which is designed to seamlessly connect supply chain trading partners, including apparel manufacturers, retailers, vendors and freight consolidators, enabling them to share production and shipping data in real time. The solution incorporates web-based software, label printers and scanners, label media and global services such as multilingual capabilities and local support.

Bostik Findley Inc will be featuring its 100 per cent solids adhesive product for textile and nonwoven producers, available in polyamide, polyester, polyolefin, polyurethane and thermoplastic rubber pressure sensitives. In addition, the company will be showcasing its fire-retardant adhesives and coatings.

Browzwear, a leading developer of innovative real-time 3D solutions for the fashion and apparel industry, will unveil its virtual modeling and design product - V-Stitcher - in the Digital Zone. V-Stitcher offers industry players true-to-life modelling that enables them to create a virtual garment from a 2D pattern over a 3D body image. This capability hails a breakthrough in the design process and drastically reduces product approval and production times by allowing the entire supply-chain to visualise products accurately and share inputs simultaneously without having to create a product samples.

Camatron Sewing Machine Inc will exhibit an expanded Juki LK1900 electronic bartack machine converted to sew a Levi-type band end finish. Also installed on this machine will be an automatic bobbin case changer. Included in the exhibit will be a Brother B484 machine converted to sew boxer shorts and a Singer 269W label tacker with flip-flop type clamping.

Catame Inc will be showing its new line of zippers as well as its new line of No 3 nylon and No 3 plastic moulded two-way separating zippers. Paul Lai, a leading Catame executive, remarks: "A challenge we see on a day-to-day basis is that everything has to be done yesterday. The apparel industry never waits for anyone." In order to meet this time-sensitive concern, Catame manufactures all its zippers domestically, decreasing lead times and ensuring high-quality zippers, he reports.

Computer Generated Solutions (CGS) will introduce Blue Cherry, an integrated enterprise resource planning (ERP)/supply chain management (SCM) solution designed to handle every aspect of a company's operations, including SCM, production administration (including purchasing, manufacturing and trafficking) and distribution of finished product to customers.

According to Bruce Labott, CGS' director of sales and marketing for the Applications Solutions Division: "I would say that the biggest challenge facing the sewn products industry is staying competitive. That involves controlling costs, on-time delivery and customer service. Our products, especially Blue Cherry and ACS Optima, control all aspects of manufacturing, including imports, domestic manufacturing or 807."

Clauss Cutlery will offer its ergonomic sewing shears with Ultra Flex soft handles. At Clauss, the No 1 challenge being addressed is making high-volume hand work more comfortable for the operator, the company reports.

Compucon USA will present its latest software package that offers the ability to have a custom programme for digitising or editing embroidery. Version 3 of EOS incorporates e-commerce, auto digitising and online ordering capabilities with a virtual sample making function. Compucon will also present live demonstrations of all of its other software at Bobbin World.

Comelz USA will exhibit metering devices for elastic with insertion, pretension, metering and cutting possibilities.

Cutting/Sewing Room Equipment Co Inc will offer complete cutting room solutions, designed specifically for start-up operations. For both manual and automated cutting rooms, the equipment will include cloth spreaders, cutting knives, tables, electric feedrail and related machinery and supplies. English and Spanish salespeople and technicians will be on hand.

The DE Williams Co will showcase its choke-resistant casters for progressive bundle carts as well as other materials handling units on wheels.

Elastic Corporation of America Inc will introduce a newly designed line of woven and knitted elastics for seamless garment applications. These elastics feature ultrasheer custom stretch levels and decorative edges, and are available in various finishes and dye options.

Entel Systems will be showing its newly released Entel 2000 production control software. The new release is a completely redesigned 32-bit Windows application that will support companies with as few as 50 to as many as 3,000 employees, the company reports. Entel 2000 provides modules for piecework ticket production, piecework and modular payroll management, work-in-process tracking, time and attendance management and piece goods and machine parts inventory control. The system is available in English and Spanish versions.

Eton Systems Inc will demonstrate the Eton 400, a new line designed to handle virtually unlimited product bulkiness while maintaining high-production flow using the firm's "Syncro load" solution. The system is designed to enable non-apparel sewn products manufacturers to utilise an automated unit production system. The firm also will demonstrate new releases of its Windows NT-based programs, Eton SOFT and SOFTPro, both of which offer real-time production load balancing features. SOFTPro also offers a bundle tracking option, and the capability to capture data from the preparation and finishing areas.

Exact Software Co will release new business components in its ApparelWorks application suite. The new components are designed to deliver more advanced graphical and interactive reports and schedules.

"Our clients' biggest challenge is being able to analyse enterprise information before it becomes too late to act upon," says Michael Piombino, vice president of sales and marketing.

Fast React Systems Ltd is launching Fast React Evolution, which incorporates cascading planning boards for high- and low-level planning, and Fast React APS (advanced planning system), which is designed to speed the process of evaluating manufacturing options.

The Feit Co will showcase Americut cloth cutting knives for straight cutting machines made to exact OEM specifications. Americut knives are available with wave edge, Teflon coating, taper tip and other special variations to fit all brands of cutting machines, Feit reports.

Ferd Schmetz GmbH will feature industrial sewing machine needles and household sewing machine needles for various fields of application, including textiles, leather, embroidery, furs, technical textiles and special applications. The company also will showcase its new Servicehouse offering, which encompasses consulting services, training sessions and seminars, brokerage services, technical advice, reports and analysis of sewing-related problems and issues.

Gütermann of America Inc will be introducing Piuma No 140, a texturised microfibre thread made from 100 per cent polyester. Designed to offer a soft feel against the skin and to be ideal for use in the underwear, lingerie and swimwear manufacturing segments, Piuma No 140 can be used in the needle and looper of all chainstitch, overlock and coverseam type machines at speeds up to 5,500 stitches per minute.

Goldberg Sewing Supplies will showcase "Orange" brand sewing/embroidery machine needles as well as the newly designed flip-cap package. The company also will be discussing its global outsourcing services, through which it can produce custom-made spare parts for customers.

Henderson Sewing Machine Company Inc will offer a variety of Juki and Yamato sewing machines, including the Juki models LZ 2290-7 zigzag machine, DDL-9000-7 electronic single-needle machine, MB-1800 electronic button sewer and LBH-1700 buttonhole machine and the Yamato LG 2150LE zigzag and the MC 2002 banding machines.

JetSew Corp will showcase its model 2856 automotive floormat hemming system, which incorporates a robotic in-feed device that automatically picks the top mat from the lending stack and loads the sewing module, where a binding or serged stitch is applied. One operator can load two machines.

"With the new and expanding global economy, the implementation of NAFTA and products being imported from low-wage Third World countries, it is increasingly difficult for US manufacturers to produce products at a competitive price," says William Hinton, sales manager. One way to combat these challenges is to implement automation that yields high-quality goods at minimum cost, he adds.

Justwin Technologies, a leading provider of Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) solutions for the apparel, textile, footwear, home furnishings, and fast-moving

consumer goods industries, will leverage its participation in the upcoming Bobbin World 2001 event to launch significant new additions and enhancements to the Justwin suite of collaborative software solutions.

Leading the list of new and improved products is an all-new version of the company's core product, Justwin 5.0. Also being showcased are the latest enhancements that enable retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers to better leverage the Internet to collaborate on new product development, sourcing and production, and supply chain management.

Kessler America LLC will feature the electrically height-adjustable workstation for sit-down and stand-up operations. The system includes a work surface lift range of 16 inches, and the station can be lifted with the push of a button. The workstation comes fully equipped with vertical uprights to locate parts bins and tools. It also offers easy assembly with a modular concept and simple retrofitting to different types of sewing machines.

Korea Sewing Machine will feature the new SunStar SPS/A-B1202 electronically controlled button sewing machine, which offers a 550W AC servo motor and maximum sewing speed of 2,500 spm. The unit can accommodate button sizes 8 to 32. The machine has a button clamp lift maximum height of 13 mm, memory EP-ROM that holds 33 standard patterns and the capacity for 20 per cent to 200 per cent enlargement or reduction of designs. The firm also will be demonstrating a variety of other SunStar and SWF brand embroidery machines.

Kretzer Scissors Inc will exhibit the Finny Alpha 72020, eight-inch bent handle trimmer. Like other types of Kretzer scissors, the new model of trimmers offers hollow ground blades and a design in which both blades curve toward each other to help ensure precision in cutting delicate materials, such as silk.

Laniere de Picardie Inc will introduce Style 1019, a new woven fusible interlining line for men's and women's tailored coats and jackets that meets all NAFTA and Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) trade law duty and quota requirements. The interlining is dry cleanable.

"With so many manufacturers going offshore, our customers' No 1 challenge is to develop a front fusible product that would reduce a manufacturer's duty," says Joan Schoer, senior account executive. Customers also are challenged to develop hair canvas products that meet NAFTA rules. The firm's Canada Hair Cloth canvas producer offers a product that meets the necessary specifications, she notes.

MacDermid ColorSpan is featuring its new sampling solution, which allows garment designers and producers to print more designs and patterns, refine those designs internally faster and better and bring more samples to their customers, the company reports. As part of this solution, the firm will demonstrate its ColorSpan FabriJet printer and the ProofMaster RIP, which can print on cotton, silk, Lycra and a variety of other fabrics.

The Merrow Machine Co is set to unveil its new parts manuals, which feature graphic indexes followed by detailed exploded views of the subassemblies or work groups of parts. Users will be able to easily locate part and assembly numbers, the company reports. Non-English speakers also can use the manuals, which have been designed with graphics rather than text.

Methods Workshop will introduce Quick TruCost, an all-new software system that provides quick and accurate costing for new sewn products at the critical initial design stage of development. By knowing true labour cost from the start, Quick TruCost eliminates the risk of unsure costing "guesstimates," the firm reports.

Namco Inc will showcase its automated printer pad printing and rotary screenprinting system, which is designed to increase production and improve efficiency. The new system is fully programmable and allows up to 200 print profiles to be stored for easy recall.

Nester Software Technologies Inc will exhibit e-Nester, a web-based pay-per-use automatic nesting service, based on the firm's Nester software and integrated with Gerber Technologies' AccuMark and MicroMark systems. "There is an increasing shortage of skilled marker makers, especially as companies migrate from one location to another. Nester provides immediate and affordable expertise while saving precious time and material," says Steve McLendon, executive vice president, on how Nester is addressing critical business challenges.

New York Sewing Machine will display its new jumbo box pleater machine, specially designed for table skirting by the hospitality industry, including hotels, caterers, restaurants, casinos, convention facilities and specialty decorators. The company also will be demonstrating a wide range of other machines, including: a lace runner, an automatic lace shiring machine, a high-speed box pleater, an automatic elastic insertion machine, a curtain ruffler, a box pleater, pillow sham and bedspread rufflers, bra attachment units, a post-mould bra sewing machine, automatic button sewing and hopper equipment, a drapery pinch pleater, a semi-automatic placket unit, a collar-setting and neck taping machine for polo shirts, an ultrasonic welding and sealing machine and more.

Pacific Steam Equipment Inc will offer the new PSE-1, versatile mini steam generator, which can be developed and configured for a variety of small applications that require high quality steam. Also demonstrated will be the PSE-1RG steam-electric iron, the PSE-1UC upholstery steamer, the PSE-1JR jewelry cleaner and the PSE-1RBC one-steam brush.

Pegasus Corporation of America, the sales company of Osaka, Japan-based Pegasus Sewing Machine Mfg Co Ltd, regards Bobbin World 2001 as one of the biggest opportunities to break into the Central and South American markets - the production base of the US apparel industry. The company will be introducing its latest technology, the M700 Series of over-edgers, various interlock machines for decorative stitching, and a range of other sewing equipment.

Pennsew will present the Yamato AZF8403 cylinder arm top-feed overlock sewing machine with bottoms hemming attachment for hemming sleeves and bottoms of T-shirts. Speaking about the future of the industy, Robert Matusic, president, says: "All customers, not just mine, are badly in need of orders to fill capacity. Plant after plant has closed in the US while manufacturers search for the country with the next lowest labour rate. This trend will continue until 2005, when China gains most-favoured nation status, and then all contractors will be out of business and all manufacturing will take place there."

Phillocraft will introduce a new ergonomic chair built to be durable, comfortable and versatile. The chair features a horizontally and vertically adjustable back, 360-degree swivel, a seat with a waterfall design and a choice of casters or gliders.

Printex srl and Printex USA Inc will present print labellers that have been manufactured to offer easy labelling of goods with prices and barcodes.

PRO.ESA, the El Salvador investment promotion agency, comes to Bobbin World for the first time this year bringing with it opportunities and information about foreign investment in the country. Among the information provided, PRO.ESA will offer economic facts, details about trade agreements and incentives as wells as the contact information attendees need to establish business relations in El Salvador, says Juan Zepeda, investment advisor.

PSR/Pennsylvania Sewing Research will be exhibiting its model BLP belt loop processor, which processes belt loop sewn with anti-fray film or web at speeds up to 75 feet per minute. This machine offers self-threading and belt loop removal from the heat chamber when desired. Moreover, an automatic shutoff feature will turn off the machine if the belt loop runs out or the unit jams.

Pulse Microsystems will be showing its latest version of Signature 2000. Version 9.1 allows users to create special stitch effects, including functions for automatic colour blending and turning. The new version offers the "Wave Fill," "Sequin" and "Elastic Carve" special effect tools. Pulse will also showcase its new Librarian design management software, as well as Stitchport Xpress. The latter is an automated solution for medium- and small-sized embellishers who want to quickly create a website to offer their embroidery and screenprinting services.

Randy Hangers LLC will offer its expanded line of men's suit hangers for wide-shouldered suits and jackets. These hangers are available in sizes ranging from 17 inches to 20 inches, with fixed bar, no bar or wooden dowel. "The growing demands of garment-on-hanger programmes [GOH] pose increasing global supply logistics for garment manufacturers," says Lorraine Iehle, marketing manager. Randy Hangers is answering demand by adding new locations in Asia, the Middle East, Central America and the United States to manufacture and distribute its product.

Sal-Bee Machine Ltd will introduce two new machines at Bobbin World. One is the PK600R, which automatically advances transfers printed on rolls each time the machine cycles. The operator positions the part, and then the heat transfer is applied and the electronic circuitry ensures that the roll transfer has been advanced to the proper position. The other new unit is the PK600P, which automatically picks and places labels or appliqués that have been loaded in a magazine hopper onto the pre-positioned product.

SAP America Inc will show Bobbin World attendees solutions for leveraging the Internet to provide a range of valuable features, such as monitoring the external production process and tracking deliveries to customers. The firm will demonstrate its SAP Apparel & Footwear solution, which is designed to be an end-to-end, industry-specific solution for supply chain management, customer management (related to e-business and enterprise portals), business intelligence and high-volume transactions.

Scanvec Garment Systems (SGS) will be demonstrating its new Interactive Virtual 3D Draping; the transition from PDS and made-to-measure to 3D and B2B capabilities;

the new generation of OptiJet inkjet plotter; and a large number of new features and functionalities in the OptiTex software family. SGS is currently working on the development of OptiTex version 9X as well, with particular emphasis on additional features/functionalities that have been requested by SGS customers and the market in general.

Shore To Shore (STS) will offer its full production capabilities for tags, labels and other types of merchandise identification. New additions to the STS portfolio include printed fabric labels, electronic article surveillance (EAS) security tags and woven labels.

Silverman Machines International will be exhibiting a complete creasing station for finishing uniform shirts. This station is capable of creasing shoulder epaulets, pocket flaps, the centre pleat on the pocket and the pocket itself.

Sommers Plastic Products will offer its recently launched lines, including: the "Fun Fur" collection, 10 patterns of "guilt-free" faux animal furs; "Asteroid" and "Meteorite," two new polyurethane fabrics in more than 40 colours; and the "Crocodile" and "Ostrich" lines. The firm also will show its "Polyurethane 2001" stretch polyurethane, which is available in a wide range of colours and in four new grains, including "Hot Rod," "Silky Look," "Mini Checkers" and "Iridescent Twill."

Sunbrand will be offering an integrated supply programme, which is designed to reduce the complexity of the supply chain, reduce equipment and supplies procurement costs, improve communication and reduce cycle times. The company will demonstrate how its programme will help its customers focus on core business concerns, improve productivity and reduce inventory. Sunbrand also will be offering value-added services, including: analysis of in-plant inventories (of parts and supplies); analysis of historical parts usage; determination of in-plant inventory requirements and maximum and minimum inventory levels.

Ted Thorsen Co will exhibit a variety of reusable shipping, cross-border and interplant handling containers for the sewn products industry. The company reports that it is focusing on competing effectively worldwide without compromising on-time delivery, manufacturing quality, business integrity or style.

Unicraft Corp will offer improved air flotation tables. Compared with previous models, they feature a new, more efficient air blower and a more efficient air flow path, which together can significantly reduce operating costs, the company reports.

US Blindstitch Co will have a variety of machines on display at Bobbin World, including: the model 1099-SF for sleeve lining and felling on men's and ladies' dress suits; the 1099-BL for belt loops (with a fusing unit); the special model 638 face tacking machine for sewing lightweight fabrics; the 1099-PW-1 cuff felling machine for men's trousers; the 1099-WB-1 waistband machine for dress trousers; the 1099-PBW-1 for bulky safety stitch seams (recommended for denim applications); and many other models.

Veit Brisay Kannegiesser will show its new range of wrinkle-free pressing machines for processing trousers and shirts, as well as a variety of machines for automated and manual pressing of garments, including spot removal stations and automated folding equipment.

YKK (USA) Inc will be featuring machines that address various manufacturing requirements that confront jeans contractors when dealing with their customers. The company will also have equipment that fabricates TapeCraft Webbing to YKK plastic products.
