February retail sales picked up across the board

The following is a general roundup of US apparel and shoe chains' February 2010 sales results. The list will be updated as new results become available.

Global retailer Gap Inc reported net sales of $838m for the four-week period ended 27 February, which represented a 5% increase compared with the same month last year. The company's same-store sales for February 2010 were up 3% on February 2009.

Apparel chain American Eagle Outfitters said February sales increased 6% to $188m, while same-store sales increased 6% for the month.

Trendy retailer Abercrombie & Fitch reported net sales of $198.1m for the four-week period, up 16%. Its same-store sales increased 5% in February.

Mall-based Aeropostale announced that total net sales for the four-weeks ended 27 February increased 15% to $126.4m. The company's same-store sales increased 7% for the month.

The Cato Corporation reported sales for the four weeks ended 27 February of $80.0m, an increase of 7%. Same-store sales for the month increased 3% over the prior year.

Luxury retailer Nordstrom reported a 10.3% increase in same-store sales for February. It said preliminary total retail sales of $539m for February 2010 were up 14.5% compared with the same period last year.

Off-price retailer Ross Stores said that sales during the month increased 16% to $554m, and that same-store sales for the month grew 11%.

The Wet Seal, a leading specialty retailer to young women, reported that net sales grew 7.4% during February. Same-store sales also grew, by 7.4%, during the month.

Victoria's Secret operator Limited Brands reported a same-store sales increase of 10% for the month of February. The company reported net sales of $600.1m for the four weeks, compared to net sales of $547.8m last year.

Apparel seller Stein Mart said total sales during February fell 11.4% to $74.5, with same-store sales down 9.3% during the period.

Maternity apparel retailer Destination Maternity Corporation reported that net sales for the month of February 2010 decreased 1.4% to $42.1m. Same-store sales for the month decreased 9.3% versus a February 2009.

Branded apparel retailer Stage Stores reported that its total sales for month decreased 2.1% to $99m. Same-store sales decreased 3.9%.

Speciality retailer Zumiez announced that total net sales for the four-week period increased 19.6% to $27.6m. February same-store sales increased 11.2%, the company said.

Music-influenced Hot Topic said sales for its fiscal month of February fell 5.3% to $54.2m, while same-store sales dropped 7% for the month.

Apparel chain The Buckle said same-store net sales for February increased 5.1%. The company's net sales for the four-week fiscal month increased 9.7% to $69.4m.

Fashion apparel chain The Bon-Ton Stores announced that same-store sales for the month of February increased 0.5%. Total sales for the four weeks decreased 0.1% to $199.9m, it added.

Department store chain Macy's posted total sales of $1.641bn for the four weeks ended 27, an increase of 4.0%. On a same-store basis, its sales were up 3.7% in February.

The TJX Companies reported February 2010 sales of $1.4bn, up 16% over the same period last year. Same-store sales for the month increased 10%.

Department store JC Penney saw same-store sales increased 1.2% for the four-week period, while company sales in February increased 1.5%.

Meanwhile, Kohl's Corporation said total sales for the month increased 7.8%, while same-store sales rose 3.7% during February.

Retailer Saks Incorporated announced that owned sales totaled $171.8m for the month, a 3.1% increase. Same-store sales increased 2.0% for the month.

Fashion apparel chain Dillard's said sales for the month were $499.1m, unchanged on a percentage basis. Same-stores increased 2% for the four-week period.
