USA: Apparel Retailers' September Sales Roundup | 11 Oct 02

The following is a general round-up of apparel and shoe chains' September sales results which have been released over the past few days: Women's and men's clothing retailer Talbots Inc said its same-store sales fell 6.1 per cent last month and added total sales for the five weeks ended October 5 were up one per cent to $176.6m from $174.7m in 2001.

AnnTaylor Stores Corporation reported Wednesday that comparable store sales for the four week period ended 31 August 2002 decreased 7.6 per cent. By division, Ann Taylor store sales were down 8.7 per cent compared to an 8.2 per cent decrease last year, and the Ann Taylor Loft division saw a decrease of 5.4 per cent compared to an 11.8 per cent increase last year.

Leading women's clothing chain AnnTaylor Stores Corp was celebrating today after its second quarter net profits more than doubled to $18.2 million from 2001 amid higher sales and reduced inventory levels. The New York-based operator of 555 outlets under banners including AnnTaylor and AnnTaylor Loft said sales in the 13 weeks to August 3 climbed 10.6 per cent to $343.1m but same-store sales fell 0.2 per cent.

Women's wear retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corporation today said total net June sales increased 9.6 per cent to $127.190 million, but that comparable store sales for the period decreased 1.2 per cent over last year. By division, comparable store sales for fiscal June 2002 were down 1.4 per cent for the Ann Taylor division compared to a 16.1 per cent decrease last year, and down 0.6 per cent for the Ann Taylor Loft division compared to a 1.0 per cent decrease last year.

Women's fashion chain AnnTaylor Stores Corp on Thursday posted a 5.2 per cent fall in May same-store sales as unseasonal colder weather had an adverse impact on sales of warm weather apparel. The chief executive and president of troubled fashion giant Gap Inc, Millard Drexler, has announced he is to retire and will leave the company after 19 years of service as soon as the board finds a replacement.

The surprise announcement came in a statement issued by the California-based operator of over 4,200 stores late on Tuesday. Company chairman Donald Fisher and board members Bob Fisher, Adrian Bellamy and Arun Sarin will lead the search for his successor.

Leading women's apparel retail chain AnnTaylor Stores Corp yesterday revealed its first-quarter net profit almost doubled to $20.9 million from $10.9m in the year-ago period thanks to strong sales of full-price fashions.

The operator of Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft stores, said same-store sales for the quarter to May 4 were flat and are expected to remain so during the second quarter. Total net sales for the quarter climbed 12.5 per cent to $345.4m.

Women's clothing retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corp on Wednesday posted a steep rise in fourth quarter profits to $9.95 million from $5.1m in the year-ago period, after an overhaul of its merchandise boosted sales. Those figures were in line with analysts' expectations with AnnTaylor also reporting an 8.1 per cent climb in fourth quarter net sales to $371.4m and a 2.1 per cent rise in same-store sales.

Women's career clothing retailer The AnnTaylor Stores Corporation says it will have quarterly pre-tax costs of $17 million as it writes down assets, discontinues its cosmetics business and cancels some merchandise orders to control inventory.
