Trendy women's apparel chain Bebe Stores Inc on Monday blamed low inventory levels for an expected fall in same-store sales in the fiscal first quarter ending in September. But the retailers said goods were moving off store shelves faster and prices were higher than a year ago, which bode well for profit margins.

The following is a round-up of apparel and footwear companies' sales results for July which have just been released: Footwear chain Brown Shoe Co said its same-store sales fell 2.7 per cent last month from the year-ago period. Total sales at its Famous Footwear unit rose 1.2 per cent to $86.3 million, although sales at its Naturalizer division fell to $8.9m from $9.6m on a reduced store base.

Women's apparel retailer Bebe Stores Inc today reported that net sales for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2002 were $73.5 million, up 5.5 per cent from $69.7 million reported for the fourth quarter a year ago.  Same store sales for the quarter decreased by 7.9 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the prior year. Net earnings for the fourth quarter decreased 31.0 per cent to $4.0 million, compared to $5.8 million for the same period a year ago.

Women's apparel retailer bebe stores inc on Tuesday announced its president and COO, John Parros, has resigned with immediate effect in order to "pursue other opportunities".

In a short statement, the California-based operator of 164 stores said it had not yet found a successor. "We wish John good luck in all future endeavours," said Manny Mashouf, chairman and CEO.

Baker, Inc (Nasdaq:JBAK) reported that total sales in its Casual Male Big & Tall, Repp Big & Tall, Work 'n Gear and Footwear divisions for the five weeks ended September 30, 2000 increased 13.2 per cent to $67m, compared to $59m for the five weeks ended October 2,1999. Comparable store sales for the month of September increased 4.1 per cent. Year-to-date sales for the eight months ended September 30, 2000 increased 17.9 per cent to $477m, compared to $404m for the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the eight- month period increased 2.9 per cent. The company's results for the month and year-to-date periods reflect the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of the Repp Big & Tall stores and the Repp By Mail catalog and e-commerce businesses in May 1999, as well as the business acquired from Shoe Corporation of America at the end of February 2000. The company has begun reporting Repp Big & Tall store sales in its Big & Tall and total comparable store sales numbers in September 2000.
