The Columbus, Ohio-based retailer, which operates Victoria's Secret and Express, said total sales in the four weeks ended 1 February were $563.9 million, an 8 per cent increase on the $522 million reported last year.

Women's sportswear designer and marketer Bernard Chaus Inc on Tuesday acquired certain assets of SL Danielle, a privately held manufacturer of moderately priced women's clothing based in New York City. Chaus said in a news release the acquisition will provide it with "new capabilities in the private label arena and create a platform for expansion into the moderate segment of the women's clothing market". Financial details were not disclosed.

Retail giant Charming Shoppes Inc is to axe one of its plus-sized women's clothing chains and 207 stores in a move that will see it take a $37.5 million fourth-quarter pre-tax restructuring charge.

In a statement released, the company said it intends to focus on building its more productive Lane Bryant chain and as a result will close the 77 outlets in the Added Dimensions/Answer chain, along with 130 under-performing Fashion Bug stores.

Net sales were $816.3 million, compared to sales of $864.5 million for the four-week period ended 25 November 2000. Excluding sales in 2000 from Lane Bryant, which was sold to Charming Shoppes Inc in August 2001, sales increased 3 per cent.

Leading US apparel chain Charming Shoppes Inc today reported an increase in sales during October of 56 per cent to $170.4 million. The retailer, which operates nearly 2,500 stores, said the large increase was partially due to the acquisition of Lane Bryant from Limited Inc, which took place in August.
