Licensing and brand management company Cherokee Inc has engineered an agreement between DIC Entertainment and Toys "R" Us to create a complete line of Liberty's Kids branded merchandise. The retailer will be directly responsible for the development and manufacturing of toys, school supplies, accessories, party goods and girls and boys apparel with a planned launch date in early spring 2003. Animated series Liberty's Kids will debut on PBS Kids on 2 September 2002.

Leading mass merchandise department store retailer Zellers has launced an urgent recall of infant clothing made with "sherpa" fabric after discovering a potential safety hazard. The company issued the alert amid concerns some items from its Cherokee range could catch fire quickly if exposed to an open flame. However it emphasised there had been no reported incidents or injuries as a result of the fault.

Diluted earnings per share increased 14.7 per cent to $0.39 versus $0.34 in the comparable period last year.

Native American tribesmen have turned to a small Scottish weaving company to kit them out in traditional clothing, the Express on Sunday reported. Time was running out when elders from the Shoshone and Cherokee nations appealed to specialist weavers Creagaran Scotland Ltd in Galashiels. The cloth of the tribes' existing garments was wearing out and the tribes could not find an American company to produce the heavy woollen fabric that is used to make ceremonial clothes worn on holidays and feast days.

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The Cherokee brand, sold at Target Stores in the US and The Hudson's Bay's Zellers Stores in Canada, is one of the largest lifestyle apparel, footwear, and accessory brands in North America and is on track to approach retail sales of $2bn for the fiscal year-end January 2001.
