Payless ShoeSource Inc has today reported that same-store sales increased 6 per cent during the January reporting period, the five weeks ended February 3, 2001 versus the comparable five weeks last year. Company sales totaled $190.6m, a 38.1 per cent increase from $138.1m during the four weeks of January 1999. Total sales for fiscal 2000 were $2.95bn, an 8 per cent increase from sales of $2.73bn during fiscal 1999.

Skechers USA Inc today announced that it is organising its operations in the United Kingdom and Ireland in order to establish direct control over its wholesale distribution, merchandising and marketing in the region. As part of this initiative, the company has created Skechers USA Ltd, a subsidiary with headquarters in London. Effective immediately, Skechers will assume responsibility for sales and logistics from Sportsflair Inc, a subsidiary of The Pentland Group, which has handled distribution for the past five years.

Sportswear maker Quiksilver Inc said it plans to open as many as 30 stores in 2001 as it boosts its capital expenditures, the Los Angeles Times reported. The California-based company estimated its capital expenditures at $18m to $22m, an increase from $16.4m last year, when Quiksilver focused expansion on stores and in-store shops, and adding computer equipment.

Genesco Inc today announced plans to initiate a test of a new concept targeting the "tween" customer, ages five to 12, opening up to four stores during the first quarter of next fiscal year.The concept, named "Journeys Kidz," is an offshoot of the company's successful Journeys chain of more than 400 stores aimed at teen and young adult customers. USA: Hampton Gets $65m Re-Financing Deal | 7 Nov 00

Fleet Capital Corporation, a commercial finance company, has arranged a $65m credit facility for Hampton Industries, Inc (Amex: HAI), the apparel manufacturer of brands including Nautica childrenswear and Dickies casualwear. The credit will be used to refinance existing debt. CIT Financial participated in this financing. According to Fleet senior vice president, John Scott Collins, this loan should help Hampton Industries continue to grow its business: "Hampton Industries has strong brand equity and experience in the apparel industry. This loan provides the company with the financing it needs to continue to implement its business plans." Steven Fuchs, Hampton's president, said: "We are very pleased with the new facility and the greater flexibility it provides for Hampton. As a result of last year's conversion and hurricane problems, an unusually large amount of inventory had been carried this year which led to higher borrowing levels for all of 2000. Now that almost all of the excess inventory has been sold and shipped, we expect that our borrowings will return to more normal levels by year end and next year."
