USA: Footstar To Run Federated's Children's Shoe Department | 3 Jan 02

US retail giant Federated Department Stores Inc and leading athletic footwear retailer, Footstar Inc, announced on Thursday that Footstar's Meldisco division will begin operating Federated's licensed children's shoe departments from July 1, 2002. The 46 children's shoe departments, currently operated by Stride Rite, will be redesigned with open-sell fixtures and will introduce Federated's new Greendog private brand of children's shoes.

USA: Safeway's Burd Joins Kohl's Board | 19 Nov 01

The board of directors at specialty department store Kohl's Corp has elected Steven A Burd as a director. Burd is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Safeway Inc, a $34 billion food and drug retailer, based in Pleasanton, California. "Steve's broad retail expertise and experience in leading a successful, high-growth company makes him a valuable addition to our board," said Larry Montgomery, chief executive officer of Kohl's.

Steven Madden, Ltd announced Monday that Rob Schmertz, 37, has been promoted to the newly created position of president of Diva Acquisition Corp., the company's wholly-owned subsidiary that designs, produces, and markets the David Aaron brand.  Mr Schmertz, who has 17 years of experience in the footwear industry, has been with Steven Madden, Ltd since May 1998. K-Swiss Inc has formed a joint venture with Rugged Shark, a cutting-edge designer and manufacturer of young, active-oriented footwear, to license, produce and market a men's, women's and children's collection of National Geographic outdoor-oriented and casual footwear. AUSTRALIA: Tamar Looms Auctioned Off | 30 May 01

Equipment from Tamar Knitting Mills in northern Tasmania was auctioned on 29 May 2001. The looms and equipment were sold as 350 items after efforts to sell the business as a going concern were unsuccessful. The auction was attended by 200 buyers. Liquidator, Steven Hernyk, said the equipment was purchased mainly by small textiles manufacturers seeking to expand.

AUSTRALIA: Knitting Mill Fails To Sell | 15 May 01

Efforts to locate a buyer for Tamar Knitting Mills in Launceston have been unsuccessful in mid-May 2001. Liquidator, Steven Hernyk, of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, said equipment and looms from the mill will be auctioned in late May 2001. The company was placed into administration in early 2001, after standing down its workforce in November 2000. Mill owner, Ian Thompson, had previously indicated it had received 10 expressions of interest in the business.

Florida-based holding company American Commerce Solutions has accepted the resignation of David N DeBaene as a director of JD American Workwear Inc, the company he took public in 1995. Steven D Smith, president commented: "Mr. DeBaene has worked long and hard to create a solid future for this company. USA: Department Store Consolidation On The Horizon - Report | 30 Mar 01

Department stores are likely to experience a wave of consolidation, according to the latest report from Bear Stearns retail analyst Steven Kernkraut. The new report, entitled "To Live or Let Die?", argues that consolidation will allow the department store business model to thrive well into the future. "Through mergers and acquisitions, department stores should be able to increase their strength and fend off discount stores and specialty stores that continue to eat away at their market share," Kernkraut said.

ROMANIA: Firmelbo’s Investment Pays Off | 14 Feb 01

Firmelbo SA, a Romanian-based acrylic fibre manufacturer, has invested over 45bn lei ($1.6m) to modernise equipment in 2000. As a result, Firmelbo received the quality standard ISO 9002 at the end of 2000. The daily output of the fabric, which amounts to 4,000 tonnes, increased by 25 per cent in 2000, compared to the output in 1990. About 70 per cent of the production is exported.
