Around 42,000 employees of the National Textiles Corporation could lose their jobs under a restructuring package approved by the government ministers in charge of turning the company around.

It is hoped that the majority of the lay-offs will occur under voluntary redundancy and retirement schemes.

Nearly 89,000 people work in the 104 mills owned by the National Textiles Corporation.
