Leading Japanese shoe store chain operator ABC-Mart will open its first store in Taiwan early next month as it seeks to expand its operations in Asia.

ABC-Mart plans to have ten or more sites in Taiwan and predicts sales of JPY2bn (US$0.02bn).

The company will make a roughly JPY300m investment in local footwear retailer Joint International Ltd. through a private transaction to make that firm an affiliate. The first ABC-Mart in Taiwan will open in Taipei's Ximending, an area popular with young shoppers.

The company already operates 50 plus stores in South Korea and will use its experience there and Taiwan to break into china, it said.
