Sportswear giant Adidas today (21 June) said it expects to achieve record sales of football-related products this year thanks to the success of the Euro 2012 tournament.

The company expects to achieve sales in excess of EUR1.6bn in the football category in 2012 - beating the World Cup year in 2010 when sales were worth EUR1.5bn. At the last UEFA Euro in 2008, sales of football products totalled EUR1.3bn.

"Adidas can be sure of defending its title as the most successful football brand in Europe and the world," said CEO Herbert Hainer.

In the first quarter of 2012, the company said sales in the football category were up 23% - with sales in host country Poland up 50%.
