German sportswear giant Adidas has unveiled its first mass production running shoe made from up-cycled marine plastic – and has committed to creating 1m pairs of the new UltraBoost shoes made with Parley Ocean Plastic by end of 2017.

It is also launching new one-off kit design jerseys for international football teams Real Madrid and Bayern Munich this month as part of an ongoing collaboration with sustainability group Parley for the Oceans.

Made from environmentally friendly prints, the Adidas x Parley Real Madrid and Bayern Munich home jersey feature mesh inserts on the inside of sleeves for improved ventilation, a back-neck tape with the message "For the oceans" and an Adidas x Parley loop label with an integrated NFC chip to offer fans further information on the partnership.

The jerseys will be seen on-pitch for the first and only time when Bayern take on TSG 1899 Hoffenheim tomorrow (5 November), and Real Madrid face Real Sporting de Gijón on 26 November.

Meanwhile, the UltraBoost Uncaged Parley features a Primeknit upper made from a mix of Ocean Plastic, created from plastic waste retrieved by Parley coastal interception and clean-up operations in the Maldives (95%), and recycled polyester (5%) – with each pair reusing 11 plastic bottles.

The shoes laces, heel cap base material, heel webbing, heel lining and the sock-liner cover are also made with recycled materials.

In addition, a Continental natural rubber Stretchweb outsole for all-weather traction works with the  full-length Boost midsole to help energy return. The Torsion system bar, also from a renewable source, supports the foot's natural flex with each step, says the company.

"This represents another step on the journey of Adidas and Parley for the Oceans," says Eric Liedtke, Adidas group executive board member responsible for global brands. "But we won't stop there. We're now committed to scaling those initiatives. We will make one million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic in 2017 – and our ultimate ambition is to eliminate virgin plastic from our supply chain."

The 2017 target will mean that at least 11m bottles retrieved from coastal areas will be recycled and re-purposed into performance sportswear. It also forms part of a larger commitment by the brand to increase the use of more sustainable materials in its products and focus on 'eco-innovation' through implementation of the Parley AIR Strategy (avoid, intercept, redesign), which aims to end the cycle of marine plastic pollution long-term.

UltraBoost Uncaged Parley will be available online and at Adidas stores from mid-November, priced at US$200. The Adidas x Parley Real Madrid and Bayern Munich jerseys will be available online and in selected stores.

The company created its first T-shirt using reclaimed ocean waste in July.
