Sports wear giant adidas has signed a lucrative deal to design and manufacture the kit and associated apparel of the Argentina football team during next year's World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

The deal with the Argentinean Football Federation (AFA) will see a new Argentinian World Cup collection being launched worldwide in spring 2002.

adidas already has similar agreements with several of the top teams taking part in the three-week tournament, including France, Spain, Japan, Sweden and China.

"Argentina and adidas share a legendary past and a passion for the world's biggest sport and we are genuinely excited about this new long-term partnership with this two-time world champion," said adidas spokesman Erich Stamminger.

"This partnership again shows our firm commitment to international football. and underlines our intention to further develop our business in the Latin American market."
