Leading youth-oriented apparel retailer American Eagle Outfitters Inc on Thursday posted a 7.1 per cent slide in May same-store sales at its American Eagle outlets.

The Pennsylvania-based chain said in a statement that taking into account its Canadian operation,  Bluenotes/Thriftys, May same-store sales dropped 7.7 per cent, with Bluenotes/Thriftys' same-store sales down 14.7 per cent.

The operator of 649 American Eagle US stores and 49 American Eagle Canadian as well as 112 Bluenotes/Thriftys shops added that total sales for the four week period rose 7.9 per cent from $80.7 million to $87m.
