Two US government agencies are teaming up to launch a pilot programme to help importers tackle consumer product safety issues.

The initiative between US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) will add a product safety component to the CBP Importer Self-Assessment Program.

The new component, called 'Importer Self-Assessment Product Safety,' is designed to prevent unsafe imports from entering the US.

As part of the voluntary scheme, participating companies will be able to benefit from front-of-the-line testing, reduced testing and access to CPSC-specific training.

CBP and CPSC staff will examine the importer's internal methods of controlling product safety compliance based on a questionnaire and domestic and foreign site visits.
