Internet retailer on Thursday officially opened its new apparel store featuring fashions and accessories from around 400 of the world's major fashion brands.

The Seattle-based company debuted the store last week and after a seven day trial in which it sold 14,487 shirts, 1,843 jackets, 2,712 sweaters, 3,254 pairs of shoes and 3,287 pairs of underwear, has now gone fully "live" with the store.

Among the major brands featured are Adidas, Birkenstock, EddieBauer, Hugo Boss, Levi's, Nike, Oshkosh B'Gosh, Gap, Quicksilver, Polo Ralph Lauren, Timberland and Tommy Hilfiger, with the store's launch coming in time for the lucrative holiday season in the US.

Amazon will provide the Web site browsing and purchasing facilities while its retail partners handle the inventory, packing and shipping details.

Analysts say they expect online apparel, footwear and accessories sales to rise to $5.2 billion in 2002 from $4.2bn last year.
