Same-store sales at casual apparel retailer American Eagle Outfitters Inc fell 4.6 per cent for the four-week period ended 3 August 2002.

The company reported Wednesday that consolidated comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 5.4 per cent for the month compared to the same period in 2001, and that Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 16.3 per cent in July compared to last year.

Total sales for the four-week period increased 8.2 per cent to $110.5 million, compared to $102.0 million last year. Total sales for the period include $5.7 million from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $6.6 million for the corresponding period last year.

Total sales for the 13-week period ended 3 August 2002 increased 9.2 per cent to $319.2 million from $292.4 million. This includes $18.8 million from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, compared to $21.2 million for the corresponding period last year.

Comparable sales for American Eagle Outfitters stores declined 4.8 per cent for the 13-weeks. Consolidated comparable store sales, which include American Eagle and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores, decreased 5.5 per cent, while Bluenotes/Thriftys comparable store sales declined 13.9 per cent for the period.
