Trendy apparel retailer American Eagle Outfitters Inc has posted a more than doubled first-quarter profit hike on a surge in same-store sales.

First-quarter net income totalled $55.3 million compared to net income of $25.3m in the same quarter last year.

Total sales rose 36.7 per cent to $454.0m from $332.2m a year ago, while same-store sales grew 27.1 per cent.

American Eagle designs, markets and sells its own brand of casual clothing for 15 to 25 year olds.
