American Eagle Outfitters Inc (Nasdaq: AEOS), the specialty retailer of casual apparel, accessories, and footwear for men and women, has announced an increase of 45.1 per cent in total sales for the five weeks ended December 30, 2000.

The company recorded a record $231.8m in total sales compared to$159.8m for same period last year.

The total sales for the five weeks ended December 30, 2000 includes $21.1m from the Thrifty's/Bluenotes operation that was acquired effective October 29, 2000.

American Eagle Outfitters' US sales for the same period increased 31.9 per cent to a record $210.8m from $159.8m at teh same time last year. Same store sales for the period increased 11.8 per cent compared to last year. This compares to a 16.9 per cent same store sales increase in December 1999.

Total sales for the 48 week period ended December 30, 2000 increased 29.4 per cent to $1,022.6m from $790.3m for the same 48 week period last year. Total sales includes $30.0m from the Thrifty's/Bluenotes operation.

US sales for the 48 week period increased 25.6 per cent to $992.6m from $790.3m for the corresponding 48 week period last year and US same store sales rose 5.8 per cent compared to last year.
