Youth-oriented apparel retailer American Eagle Outfitters says it will miss first-quarter earnings estimates amid weaker than expected sales in February and March.

The company reduced its earnings target to 14-17 cents a share - below city forecasts of 21 cents a share – amid flat March same-store sales, although total sales did climb 15.4 per cent to $117.4 million from the year-ago period.

It added consolidated same-store sales, which include its Bluenotes and Thriftys retail operations, slipped 1.3 per cent last month from last year.
