A 12 per cent drop in first-half footwear exports may mean that Brazil's total exports for 2002 may fall short of its $1.8 billion target.

Abicalcados (Associacao Brasileira das Industrias de Calcados) says the shartfall is due to currency devaluations and a fall in shoes prices worldwide.

Brazil's exported 171 million pairs of shoes worth $1.6 billion in 2001.
