Organisers of the Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (BATEXPO) 2001 have cancelled the event following a poor response from international buyers in the wake of the US terrorist attacks and the war against Afghanistan.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) today announced it had decided to drop the 12th BATEXPO, an annual gala event of the ready made garment (RMG) industry.

According to sources, the BGMEA had earlier dispatched 2000 letters to international buyers inviting them to attend the late November event and there had been a good response.

But following the September 11 attacks, those buyers expressed their inability to attend the show citing the unstable situation prevailing in the region.

The cancellation of the BATEXPO 2001 is a major blow to the country's troubled garment industry as spot orders in last three BATEXPO were in the region of $50 million.
