UK retail sales fell again last month as shoppers stayed at home to watch the Jubilee celebrations and the World Cup - although clothing and footwear sales rose slightly, it was revealed on Thursday.

According to the Office for National Statistics, retail sales volumes fell 0.7 per cent in June - the steepest fall for two years - despite a two per cent rise in apparel and shoe sales.

The group said the overall dip followed a 0.5 per cent slip in retail sales in May. It added that it is the first time in almost four years that sales have fallen in two consecutive months.
