Peru's imports of Asian textiles leapt 500 per cent following the removal of temporary restrictions to protect the country's industry, Peru's Minister of Production, David Lemor, was quoted by Latin America News Digest as saying.

Lemor said that the government was presently considering a new measure to protect Peru's textiles industry, and had not yet decided whether to hold negotiations with countries whose exports had increased or impose anti-dumping or protective measures.

Peru placed safeguards on 20 categories of textile goods in October 2004, which ended in May this year.

China and the US have already kick-started protective measures against imports of Chinese textiles goods.
