• Q2 profit grew 36.3% to JPY7.9bn
  • Sales increased 21.4% to JPY153.66bn
  • Overseas sales jumped 30.5% to JPY108.56bn

Japanese sporting goods company Asics Group has reported a 36.3% increase in first-half net profit, driven by higher sales in overseas markets.

The company's net income reached JPY7.92bn (US$80.3m) during the six months to 30 September, compared to JPY5.81bn in the same period last year.

Sales increased 21.4% to JPY153.66bn, up from JPY126.60bn a year earlier. In Japan, sales rose 3.9% to JPY46bn, helped by strong sales of walking shoes and Onitsuka Tiger shoes, as well as running shoes and baseball equipment.

Overseas sales jumped 30.5% to JPY108.56bn, thanks to strong sales of running shoes in the Americas and Europe, and the effect of foreign exchange rates.

During the first half, the company established a sales subsidiary in Mexico, opened Asics-branded flagship stores in Osaka, Sydney and Fukuoka, and opened flagship stores for the Onitsuka Tiger brand in Sydney and Kobe.
