The United States unit of Japanese sports shoe and apparel company Asics Corp, Asics Tiger Corp, on Tuesday changed its name to Asics America Corp.

The California-based company said the name change in the US coincides with changes to a number of the other Asics subsidiaries throughout the world.

It added Asics America Corp will continue to manage all business in the US, as well as North, Central and South America.

"Asics Tiger has been growing steadily and has been consistently gaining market share, outpacing the industry trends," said Richard Bourne, president and COO of Asics America.

"This move will further define Asics worldwide quest to continue the pursuit of (founder) Mr Onitsuka's dream of uniting people in the world through sport."
