The extended sizing (1X-3X or sizes 18-26) will be available across 500 styles by March

The Athleta athletic apparel brand is rolling out a major plan for plus-size customers, with 70% of its collection available in sizes 1X-3X for spring 2021.

The company, which is part of Gap Inc, says the extended sizing (1X-3X or sizes 18-26) will be available across 500 styles by March, with size-inclusive mannequins added to all 200 stores. The goal is to offer extended sizes across all categories by the end of 2022.

"We see this extended sizing offering as a key pillar of our growth goals, allowing us to invite even more customers into our community," says president and CEO Mary Beth Laughton.

Athleta designers and technical experts have spent the last two years working with thousands of women to re-engineer and expand the brand's extended sizing offering. 

Extended sizing will be merchandised the same as any other size: for each piece, the rack with size XXS - XL will also display sizes 1X - 3X, in each of the 200 Athleta stores nationwide. 

Online, Athleta will highlight a variety of body types across the site. And all Athleta store employees will participate in mandatory inclusive sizing training. 

The move taps into a wider pledge by Gap Inc to be 'Inclusive by Design' across its portfolio of brands, which includes Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic.
