Bangladesh saw readymade garment exports grow nearly 9% in its last fiscal year, boosting overall exports for the country.

Both the export earnings and growth of the garment sector surpassed the government's target for fiscal 2018, according to local reports quoting data from Bangladesh's Export Promotion Bureau.

The export of garment products registered growth of 8.76% to US$30.61bn, which was 1.51% higher than the target of $30.16bn.

In the previous fiscal year, Bangladesh earned $28.15bn in garment exports, while in fiscal 2016, earnings amounted to $28.09bn.

According to the data, knitwear garment exports grew 10.4% to $15.19bn, while woven garments rose 7.18% to $15.43bn.

Growing demand for ready-made garments from Bangladesh boosted the country's total exports in the last fiscal year, which were up 5.8% to $36.67bn from $34.65bn in the prior year.

Total export earnings for the 2018 fiscal year are expected to come in $84m lower than the government's target of $37.5bn.
