Luxury goods retailer Barneys New York Inc has revealed it swung to a profit during the third quarter as it was boosted by strong sales of designer fashions.

The Manhattan-based company posted a net profit of $2.88 million, or 21 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $8.45m, or 61 cents, in the year-ago period.

Sales in the 13 weeks to November 2 soared 16 per cent to $103.3m while same-store sales climbed 15 per cent.
