A list of suitors has begun to surface for the Barneys chain, which has been put on the block by Jones Apparel.

UK newspaper The Times identified Federated Department Stores, May Department Stores and LVMH as possible buyers. Istithmar, a private equity firm owned by the Dubai government, and a Qatari-based group are also reported to be interested.

Arcadia owner Sir Philip Green - who partnered with Barneys for the launch of Topshop's Kate Moss collection - has reportedly ruled out investing in the Barneys chain, the paper said.

Barneys, which has a flagship New York store on Madison Avenue, and six others in Chicago and Beverly Hills, is expected to raise around US$400m through the sale.
