Women's fashion chain Bebe Stores Inc has announced it will not appoint Gregory Gemette to the post of senior vice-president and chief merchandising officer as planned, citing his contractual commitments to another clothing retailer.

The Californian company had announced a fortnight ago that Gemette would take up the position in late November, with the executive expected to help the Bebe Stores division reach "its next level of growth".

Gemette has been a general merchandising manger for American Eagle Outfitters Inc's women's division.

"While I am disappointed that Greg will not be joining us, I respect his prior employer/employee relationship and would not want to interfere with any contractual commitments," chairman and CEO Manny Mashouf said.

This latest announcement comes after the company's chief financial officer John Kyees resigned on October 30, after less than two years with Bebe, to take up a similar post at youth-oriented retail group Urban Outfitters.
