German sportswear giant Adidas has scored a spectacular marketing coup thanks to the England soccer captain David Beckham.

Beckham took part in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on Thursday wearing a white and gold tracksuit showing the firm's name - despite the efforts of organisers to keep the Manchester ceremony logo free.

Up to one billion TV viewers around the world are believed to have watched the event, with Beckham the only participant out of thousands to wear sponsored apparel. Puzzled organisers are now trying to find out how the oversight happened.
