The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA), the trade body for the country’s export-oriented apparel manufacturers, has joined the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action.

Launched in December last year under the auspices of UN Climate Change, the Fashion Industry Charter goes beyond previous industry-wide commitments and is seen as an industry milestone in collectively addressing the climate impact of the fashion sector across its entire value chain.

It includes a Target of 30% GHG emission reductions by 2030 and a commitment to analyse and set a decarbonisation pathway for the fashion industry drawing on methodologies from the Science-Based Targets initiative.

By joining the initiative, BGMEA will join a united effort to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, a goal established by the Paris Agreement of 2015.

“The readymade garment industry of Bangladesh is steadily heading towards sustainability. By joining the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, BGMEA commits to working collaboratively with brands, suppliers and other organisations towards GHG emission reductions pathway that puts fashion industry towards a low carbon future,” says BGMEA president Dr Rubana Huq.

The Charter, which is open for other companies and organisations to join, recognises the crucial role that fashion plays on both sides of the climate equation; as a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and as a sector with multiple opportunities to reduce emissions while contributing to sustainable development.
